A study of the prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms in Eastern Saudi Arabia.
The prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs) in Saudi Arabia is not well known. The current study sought to determine the prevalence of AAA in Eastern Saudi Arabia. A total of 2,551 (1,957 male, and 594 female) consecutive patients were screened for AAA. The mean age of the patients was 61.1 +/- 12 years. The mean values for systolic and diastolic blood pressure (BP) were 140 +/- 20 mmHg and 77 +/- 11 mmHg, respectively. None of the patients received antihypertensive therapy. Abdominal examination was normal in 94.8% of the patients, while 2.2% showed a palpable mass. The diagnosis of AAA was confirmed by ultrasonography and CT scanning in 5 and 25 of the patients, respectively. CT scans were the preferred method of diagnosis in 88% of the patients. Aneurysms of 4.7 cm were found in 30 patients, while sizes of greater than 10 cm were found in 13 patients. The prevalence of AAA was 0.85%. Of the patients, 3.8% (61/1,711) had systolic and/or diastolic hypertension. Prevalence of AAA is very low in the Saudi population. Intrathecal treatment with sterile saline does not block allodynia in the chronic constriction injury model of neuropathic pain.
Spinal administration of analgesics has been shown to have limited efficacy in the treatment of neuropathic pain and is associated with serious side effects. The inability to block allodynia has thus been used to identify analgesics with novel mechanisms of action. However, the efficacy of intrathecal application of various analgesics has never been directly compared. In this study, animals received complete Freund’s adjuvant (CFA) or saline intrathecally 1 or 2 days after the induction of chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the right sciatic nerve. Mechanical and thermal allodynia as well as mechanical hyperalgesia were used as pain tests. Intrathecal administration of 100 microg bupivacaine significantly blocked mechanical allodynia and thermal hyperalgesia. Intrathecal application of 10 microg bupivacaine significantly blocked mechanical allodynia, but did not inhibit the development of thermal hyperalgesia. Intrathecal administration of morphine (10 and 100 microg) blocked thermal hyperalgesia, but did not inhibit the development of mechanical allodynia. Intrathecal application of sterile saline did not block the development of mechanical allodynia in the CCI model, suggesting that intrathecal application of analgesics with mechanisms unrelated to N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) and alpha-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) receptors is not able to fully block the development of chronic neuropathic pain.Proposed is a product development program that will relate methods for the molecular analysis and electronic structure studies of peptides, proteins, DNA and RNA using photoinduced electron transfer (PET) reactions.
