To demonstrate how to use the Google Cloud Vision API with Android, we’ll walk through building a simple weather app which retrieves a city’s weather conditions based on the user’s location.

The app is easy to implement and works on all Android devices, even those that lack a GPS module.

Suppose our weather app asks the user to specify their city. If it is located in a city served by the Google Cloud Vision API, the app should be able to retrieve that city’s weather conditions.

To make this work, the app must contact the Google Cloud Vision API first to perform image and object detection. This works as follows:

The location of the weather location is passed to the API service.

The API service performs object and image detection and uses the information gathered to determine the city’s weather.

When the user indicates that they’d like to use the Google Cloud Vision API, we use the camera to capture an image and submit it to the API service.
