* **Figure 2-15:** The original image on the left and the first steps in the cropping and resizing process of the image on the right. Photoshop keeps track of every layer that you create. Because each layer is represented by an area on the image, you can get a sense of how big (or small) the overall image area is. The rows of squares in Figure 2-16 represent the image’s layers, which represent the contents of the image. The _rows_ of squares are from top to bottom and represent the layers as stacked on top of each other. In Figure 2-16, Layer 1 is on top and represents the image’s background, and Layer 8 is at the bottom and represents the text layer. The gray squares represent the size of the individual pixels that make up the image, which can be seen in the bottom-right corner of the bottom layer. The border between each layer is indicated by the edge between the first gray square and the next: You can see the top right corner in Figure 2-16. If the layers were the image’s content, the top-right corner (refer to Figure 2-15) would be the portion that would show the image. For example, the image in Figure 2-15 consists of three layers. Because of this direct link to the pixels, the entire image can be manipulated and resized by simply moving, cutting, and copying (see the upcoming section «Working with Layers and Selection Tools») over the actual image that you want to move, resize, or crop. When you move or edit an individual pixel, Photoshop automatically reflects the change to the entire image or, if you resize the entire image, only the change to the pixel you’re moving or resizing. However, for the purposes of resizing and cropping, you can even move the entire image by moving a single pixel. **Figure 2-16:** Layers represent areas of the image and show the dimensions of the image. Photoshop has two primary ways to move and manipulate your images: using the Move tool, which enables you to move objects from one place to another, and using the Selection tool, which enables you to make selections from the image that you then edit (using the tools) or manipulate. You can work with both methods simultaneously by using the Select ▸ Modify… command. You can also create and manipulate selections from scratch, which is covered in more detail in Chapter
